Where is Ucluelet?

Ucluelet, British Columbia is located on the western shore of Vancouver Island. It is about a 30 minute drive from its better known cousin, Tofino.

Access to Ucluelet from the mainland (other than via small plane) is through Hwy 4 from Nanaimo. This stunning route is a 2.5 hour drive through mountains and rainforest with limited services and cell signal. Fuel up in Nanaimo before the trip and save your maps for offline use!

Hike the Wild Pacific Trail

Embark on a scenic journey along the iconic Wild Pacific Trail, tracing the rugged coastline and ancient rainforests of Ucluelet. There are 3 main sections to this trail, and all can be easily accomplished in a day if you’re determined.

The Lighthouse Loop trail offers spectacular ocean vistas and opportunities for wildlife viewing. Wander through Canada’s temperate rainforests adorned with moss-draped trees, and marvel at the powerful waves crashing against the rocky shorelines.

The Ancient Cedars Loop is a quick 15 minute trail, but you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to traverse the rocky bluffs and get pictures of the giant cedars.

Between these two sections is the Artist Loop, an accessible 45 minute hike with access to stunning cliffside views that terminates at Big Beach.

While staying on the Pacific Rim for a few months, the Wild Pacific Trail was hands down the most beautiful, interesting, and photo worthy hike that we took (and we explored almost the entirety of Pacific Rim National Park). If you are looking for things to do in Ucluelet, do not overlook this experience.

Visit the Ucluelet Aquarium

Delve into the fascinating underwater world of the Pacific Northwest at the Ucluelet Aquarium. Home to a diverse array of marine species native to the region, this small but immersive aquarium offers interactive exhibits and educational programs that highlight the importance of ocean conservation.

The Ucluelet Aquarium is Canada’s first collect-and-release aquarium. This means that all of the animals you’ll find there were responsibly collected from around the peninsula in March. They are then cared for and used for education throughout the season, and then released again at the end of the season (around November). The Aquarium is only open from March-November. If you are visiting in season, it is an entertaining and informative afternoon for all ages that we highly recommend.

Kayaking

Discover Ucluelet’s breathtaking coastline from a new perspective with a kayaking adventure. There are many kayak rental companies to choose from, and many also offer guided tours as well. If you’re more experienced or adventurous, you can rent a kayak and go on a self-guided adventure through the sound. However, keep in mind that rentals are not typically available in the off season, but you can bring your own as well!

On our visit to Ucluelet, we had our kayaks with us. We paddled through two stunning areas on either side of the peninsula. From the Ucluelet Harbour, you’ll be able to spot sea lions barking on the dock and bald eagles nesting in the trees. Take your kayaks to the west side to take off from Little Beach. From there, you can explore otherwise untouched beaches and the magic of paddling into the open Pacific ocean.

Whale Watching

By far the most exciting activity on the West Coast is to go whale watching. Much like kayaking, there are several companies that offer whale watching tours in Ucluelet and Tofino. Whale watching season is typically from mid-March to October. In the winter, the whales have gone south in search of warmer waters. If you have the opportunity, the wonder of catching a tail flip out of the ocean is definitely one of the top things to do in Ucluelet.

Have a Pint at the Brewery

After what is sure to be a memorable day filled with wildlife, activity, and adventure, take a load off at the Ucluelet Brewing Company. Nestled in the heart of the town, the Ucluelet Brewing Co offers art, music, and community while serving up local brews and eats. You’ve discovered the natural wonders of Ucluelet – now feel at home in the welcoming atmosphere of the brewpub.

Ucluelet is a true hidden gem of the Pacific Rim. With plenty to do and see, don’t make the mistake of overlooking this spot just down the road from Tofino.
