4 Mistakes to Avoid When Camping in Banff National Park

As one of Canada’s most sought-after destinations, Banff offers unparalleled beauty and adventure for camping enthusiasts from around the globe. However, camping amongst the mountains and wildlife of Banff requires some planning and preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or embarking on your first outdoor expedition, these tips will help you make the most of your time in one of Canada’s most beloved wilderness destinations.

Not Planning Ahead

Banff is arguably the most in demand national park, and even – dare I say – campground, in the entire country! If you want to go in high season (June through August), you must book your campsite ahead of time. Bookings open in January for the coming season, so plan ahead and book that site!

If tent camping, there is a designated area gated off to protect campers from bears. If in a hard sided trailer, there are many more options, including a designated trailer court that has full hookups!

Banff also has a campground that is open year round. We visited in February amongst the snow. Needless to say we were the only ones there. It made for beautiful views, though!

Running Out of Propane

This is something we learned first hand. When we were RVing in Banff, we needed propane – and it was not easy to find! We went to all of the gas stations that offered propane within the National Park and Town of Banff. They either didn’t have propane, or no one certified to fill our tanks. We ended up driving back down to Canmore to fill up. Keep that in mind if you think it’ll be nooo problem to just fill up when you get there.

Not Being Bear (and Moose, and Cougar..) Aware

Unless you are in Banff in winter, there are bears. Grizzly bears, in fact (Black bears too!). The kind you don’t necessarily want to meet on your hike.

Practice proper food storage and disposal. Keep your dog on a leash. When hiking, bring bear spray. Know how to use it before you need it. And don’t approach wildlife of any kind. Banff is home to many other creatures you will really only want to see from a great distance: cougars, moose, and elk.

Underestimating the Weather

You’re in the Rocky Mountains! One of the most beautiful places in North America. But you’re also at a much higher elevation and weather can be unpredictable and unseasonable. It could very well snow during a vacation late in the season, and nights will get cold. Pack for a few different weather options; layers are best. Especially since you’ll likely be spending all of your time outdoors anyway!
